ARREST TO ARRAIGNMENT

1) Case attrition - phenomenon of cases being dismissed before trial

 2) Complaint - charging document (used for misdemeanors / ordinance violation)

 3) Indictment - grand jury finding of enough evidence of wrongdoing to necessitate a trial

 4) Nolle prosequi - Latin for “no prosecution,” cases dismissed by prosecutor

 5) Transactional immunity - prosecutor agrees not to prosecute witnesses for crimes admitted in exchange for testimony

 6) Type I Offenses - category of UCR offenses involving serious crimes (index crimes)

 7) Type II Offenses - category of UCR crimes involving lesser crimes

 8) Uniform Crime Report (UCR) - the FBI’s annual publication with national crime statistics

 9) Use immunity - government may not use witness testimony against a witness, but may prosecute based on independent evidence
